About the Artist
I feel we each have a moral obligation to increase our capacity for joy and beauty. The way colors interplay is what gives me the greatest joy in my work. My desire as an artist is to create in woven form the joys inherent in the complexity of color found in nature. Whether it's the many gradations of color found in a single vegetable or the cacophony of hues in an entire landscape, color both sets my heart on fire and soothes my soul. I paint with yarn to capture not only the obvious, but the colors hiding in the shadows and the emotional essence of the landscape. During COVID lockdown I was able to expand my knowledge and skills by learning to dye variegated and solid colored yarns allowing limitless variations needed to fill my palette. The shawl featured in my jury photos was inspired by a Hibiscus houseplant that a local farmer had created by crossing a vibrant peach Hibiscus with a pink Hibiscus. This resulted in a bloom that ranged from peachy pink at the edges into a deep coral mid section into a deep magenta throat with streaks of lilac and a yellow pistil. I added a hot red section to the variegated yarn dyed for this color way evoking the heat of the tropics to which these flowers are native. Through weaving I hope to share with others the lightness of heart that color gives to me.
