About the Artist
When I create a successful underwater wildlife photograph, it is the result of 10% photographic skill, and 90% "fish psychology". Since I was a child, I have studied why an angelfish turns left instead of right, why coral spawns with a certain moon phase, why a sea turtle might be in the mood to bite my lens, and why, contrary to popular belief, sharks are extremely unlikely to do so. My photographic portfolio of marine life is not of SCUBA vacation pictures, nor is it documenting species in textbook style, but rather a culmination of a lifetime dedicated to feeling the ocean and its inhabitants at its most intimate level.
Using an underwater camera with SCUBA or sometimes just a snorkel and mask, I strive to interact with wild animals in a natural, non-threatening manner. Over several decades of practice, this has allowed me to capture subtle moments in the creature's lives and document behaviors which entertain, excite, and educate. By thinking like a fish (or a whale, or a turtle), I have been able to get closer, stay longer, and interact in an extremely relaxed manner, and the result is this collection of photographs, which has been displayed in prestigious museums around the world, coveted by art lovers, and been featured in countless publications.
