About the Artist

My oil-on-canvas paintings take a contemporary look at the East Coast landscape, particularly the Washington, D.C., area. Inspiration often finds me near the Potomac River, the rolling countryside, the Chesapeake Bay wetlands, or in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. My painting style varies from abstract to realistic, depending upon the subject. I strive to capture the mood of the landscape, the details are less important to me. For example, in the painting "Golden Afternoon," I purposefully left out some of the the shrubbery and trees that were in the actual landscape because they were detracting from the serenity of the composition. Scouting for landscape inspiration is part of the joy of the process. When I happen upon the right scene, I quickly sketch and photograph the scene. I return to my studio to begin painting the scene immediately -- while I can still recall the mood of the landscape I'm attempting to recreate. The results vary, but my goal is usually the same: to capture those fleeting, magical moments of tranquility that a certain landscape, in the right light, has the power to evoke. My hope is that my artwork helps to create a sense of peace for its owners. Lives and works in McLean, VA.
