Biography

Harrisburg, PA

Daniel Kepner, creator of Andalog, is a Harrisburg Pennsylvania based artist with an interest in technology, electricity, and a deep passion for exploring science to learn new things to combine into his artwork. Daniel is a self-taught wood worker and jewelry maker who loves making what he calls 'lightning captured in wood.' His artwork is not only intriguing but it offers a bit of science history through his use of Lichtenberg Fractals. The origin of this technique dates back to a physics experiment from 1777 that was done to understand the fine structure of lightning, designed and named after the German physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. Dan has taken the modern interpretation of this experiment and turned it into an art form to feature refined fractal patterns through wood. On several pieces he carefully carves out the burned-in fractals in order to add the beautiful inlay features of stone, metal, or meteorite. He also utilizes a laser to cut various shapes of wood to use as initial forms for his non-electrocuted jewelry. His favorite inlay materials for these pieces include opal, turquoise, and meteorite. In the example of the electrocuted Ebony bracelet, the wood was 3 layers steam bent to form, laminated and shaped, and electrocuted with 15,000 volts. The fractals were carved out by hand to add beautiful crushed turquoise and mother-of-pearl inlays. The bracelet was then polished and finished with a mineral oil beeswax blend. Dan has been an established artist for over 10 years and loves sharing his talent at art shows and events held all over the east coast.
