About the Artist

I paint with the knowledge that everybody is intriguing. Everyone is the hero of a story. Every moment is the climax scene in its own novel. My personal challenge is not to seek out remarkable inspiration, but rather to seize a seemingly mundane, everyday moment and illuminate it in a manner that reveals its beauty and poignancy. I prefer painting from photographs. They allow me to capture fleeting expressions, subconscious gestures, and rays of unexpected sunlight. However, I persistently undertake studies from real life to further my understanding of the subtle language of the human body and the mysterious nuances in the play of light. Painting with both acrylic and oil allows me to manipulate deep textures both visually and tangibly. I prefer to capture the initial subject and composition of a painting with acrylic and then build up the depth, intensity, and texture with oil paint. While painting, I focus on capturing the contrasts and colors in a scene, rather than each minute detail. The true charm and allure of a painting derive from its implication rather than its precision. First, I establish a monochromatic under layer through multiple acrylic washes upon canvas support. When I am confident in the composition, I switch to oil paint. Then I layer oil glazes thinned with a walnut alkyd to deepen the color and shadows. At this point, I switch my focus to the figures, and I begin to define the contours and clarify the body language. Finally, I embellish the brightest details with a few quick and accurate strokes and exaggerate the movement and texture with thick impasto-like applications of oil paint.
