About the Artist
My work consists of mixed media on wood panels. Layers of paper collage, acrylic paint, and sealant are used as well as a variety of found materials, including ink, pencil, and charcoal. Various techniques are employed such as layering of collage, and sanding and scraping between coats of sealant. This helps to create a weathered and rustic appearance balanced with clean and simple handmade frames. Every time I paint, I am trying to capture a certain euphoria I feel when a piece has turned out well. Starting with simple sketches, I begin to explore the relationship between the existing world and an imaginary one. In my pieces, I try to capture a sense of intuitive immediacy with layers of paint and collage. The spontaneous text provides a loose narrative for the viewer. A combination of dense primitive imagery, clean lines, and bold color is used to create works that straddle the line between raw and refined. Lives and works in Staunton, VA.
