Jorge Caligiuri is an explorer drawing his inspiration from the colors and cycles of nature and from architectural references found in urban spaces. Through intensity, repetition, structure and movement the artist creates his own visual vocabulary that becomes a conversation between the human-made and the organic expressions of nature, arriving at new interpretations of the ancient mediums, giving them a unique and particular identity. His technique for painting is unconventional and involves layers of paint being impressed upon one another, each layer responding to the last. Shapes and patterns can accumulate or recede as the painting develops, creating a rich strata of texture and color. The end result becomes more geological than gestural and can also create a sense of luminosity, the subtlety of the mark-making inviting the viewer to take a closer look at these culminations of color and texture.
