About the Artist
Mankind's interaction with its natural environment is the basis and subject of this work. Just as natural fossils are the imprints of prehistoric life on earth, we have created "Modern Fossils": pieces that ponder the substances we are currently leaving behind in our environment, to be unearthed far in the future. We were initially inspired by the embellished metal manhole and storm drain covers that are found in our local cities / towns. With these in mind, we create original plaster artworks, which proclaim the truth that our Planet’s health is key to our community's existence and future.
While doing local environmental clean-ups, we collect both natural materials and man-made detritus, which we use to design the images in our pieces. Our resulting wall-hangings and sculptures embody the modern dilemma of mankind's struggle to maintain a balanced relationship with nature. Our artworks also proclaim a vital environmental message: the urgent necessity of keeping our Planet clean and healthy.
Modern Fossils have their roots in Judith's love for the environment and her local river town community, combined with David's 25+ years of experience in creating and casting environmental sculptures in his native NYC and in cities around the world.
