About the Artist
I create my mixed media work using layers of painted paper, acrylic paint, graphite, and ink. Each piece begins with heavy body acrylic background. The creatures and other details are separately painted with acrylic ink on watercolor paper, cut, and incorporated into the final piece. Each piece includes many layers of acrylic, acrylic ink, graphite and gold leaf embellishments. I work on both paper and canvas surfaces.
The work is about overcoming life's challenges. Each of the creatures in my work represents a different aspect of the human experience. For example, in "Wherever We Roam" rabbits represent the ability to see the truth in our world. In this piece, rabbits ride across a sea of clouds in a carved ship. They take their home with them in the form of a ship. The quilts in my work are a nod to the love and patience of family. The rabbits are guided by their own lantern, and by fireflies that act as beacons of hope to light their way. Lives and works in Pittsboro, NC.
