About the Artist
My works are primarily non-representational, although I am greatly inspired by nature and architecture, which I feel is evident in the paintings. I work intuitively and let the paintings evolve as I work into them. I focus on how to dynamically define space in terms of flat surface, exploring line color & composition. I use spontaneous, lyrical "gestures" of oil stick & graphite which are particular to my work and convey a personal symbology and calligraphy. Collage materials of hand-printed script, designs, and handmade papers are sometimes incorporated into the paintings for complexity and building up the layers of history... obscuring, and revealing. The surfaces are first prepared with several layers of gesso to create the underlying texture before applying paint. Lives and works in Kansas City, MO.
