About the Artist
After graduating from Cleveland Institute of Art, I had the opportunity to use my traveling scholarship to study stone structures in England, Ireland, and Scotland. The form of these structures themselves as well as the markings adorning them were inspirational. I pursued a career as a stone sculptor for thirty years. Recently I had some medical issues that have redirected my work. Needing to work in a lighter material, I made a transition to hand-painted reclaimed old-growth timber here in Florida. The wood is mainly Cypress. All the designs and shapes come from my thirty years of carving stone. All the patterns I developed are my own. As I used to say about sculpture: to create form, the artist must exhibit control, balance, and mystery. I’ve held true to those ideals, exhibiting them in my new work. The combination of the raw wood and the painted surface brings forth a delicate balance. Once the layers of acrylic are completed, I then clear coat glaze the piece to enhance the depth of both raw wood and the painted surface.
