About the Artist

Kinetic pieces are interactive objects working on the principle of counterbalance-they need to be touched to be put in motion. Some objects are very simple, toy-like whimsical figures on stands - others more complicated wall stages, enclosing up to six interacting figures-they are individually cut with snips, repoussed, patinated, riveted together, and balanced. Ideally, I want the object to look antique-the patina and the surface imperfections are to me of utmost importance.I recycle the metal and wood that has been naturally weathered, and ideally shows texture and age. Then a protective coat is applied. I don’t use power tools - no plasma cutters or lasers or power shears. It’s all made the traditional way - by hand, and the transformation will never cease to fascinate me - how a piece of junk metal or discarded wood becomes another, and I like to think a more attractive object.

The assemblages and sculptural objects are mostly framed wall boxes, utilizing made and found objects. What makes me want to create and inspires me, are fairy tales from childhood, accumulated memories of joys and sorrows of the past, dreams and nightmares, daily encounters and observations, and objects I come across, which may inspire me to use them creatively - sometimes they start the idea and the whole creative process. I used to make – and still occasionally make - just playful decorative objects, but now the “Dark Side of the Earth” is coming more into focus. Thoughts about meaning of existence, contemplating the fate of Environment, of Earth, all the things we have done with our superior intellect to this planet and to other beings with whom we are sharing this space. And the “Human Condition” - interactions and behavior between individuals - Love, Hate, Religion, Greed, Altruism, Desires; these are mostly subjects of my interest and concern.
