About the Artist
Having experienced ceramic studios from Los Angelas, Central Coast California, and up to the Bay Area, my work is very much Californian, and it is beyond that, as it encompasses the production style of Europe, the glaze precision and flow of East Asia, and forms from Scandinavia. The body of work, very much, reflects my wanderlust life, having lived lives in Central America, Europe, Asia, and throughout the U.S. It is eclectic in some ways and flows seamlessly in others. Nature is my guide in terms of colors and forms.
My body of work stands apart, as I am not a production potter, but more of ceramicists, one who doesn’t focus on repeating pieces, but rather one who study glaze chemistry and science, work on and explore current and new forms, and work with various and challenging clay bodies. Moreover, I am a rare breed who fires with a gas kiln, where as the majority of work out there is done with an electric kiln. Many have termed the reduction gas firing process as one that is “painting with flames,” as you can see the flame path in the kiln and sees how it alters the colors of glazes and transforms the texture and coloration of clay bodies.
All in all, my work is defined by my life outdoors and my work habit of constant exploration and development upon the past. I feel fortunate to work with gas kilns, as it connects me the past and history of ceramics. On the hand, my exploration into forms and colors is the future of my body of work. Essentially, the two, past and future, is the fusion, which produces my work, the present.
