About the Artist

For over 30 years I’ve brought battery powered colored lights with me on my night shoots. My photographs are long exposures where I light up the scene, waving my lights like paint brushes, essentially “painting” the location with light and letting it blend with the existing city lights.
By dressing in dark clothes and moving around quickly in front of the camera, I essentially become invisible during the long exposure. This allows me to get close to the subject and to create far more interesting theatrical lighting, where I can pinpoint little dashes of color and make objects glow.
I try to light my images as though they were theatre sets, creating a fantasy version of the real world.
For example, the image Couch was shot in almost complete darkness. It was a 30 minute exposure. All the lighting you see in the image is from me walking around in black clothes shining colored lights to create the theatrical look of the final image.
